New Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy will have two shots to serve some revenge against his former team in 2019 as the Panthers will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football in Week 2, and then again in Week 6 when both teams make the trip across the pond to play in London. The Panthers were one of the three favorites to land McCoy’s services after he paid visits to Carolina, Cleveland and Baltimore last week, and while McCoy will probably never outright say it, it’s hard to believe that the chance to get some revenge against his former team wasn’t in the back of his mind when he was weighing his options.Of course, it’s being reported that the Panthers offered McCoy more money than the Browns, so it’s extremely likely that was a major factor in his decision, but I can’t shake the thought that McCoy wanted to personally show the Bucs how big of a mistake they made by letting him go and replacing him with Ndamukong Suh. (They even gave him McCoy’s old jersey number! How rude is that?)At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter much why McCoy chose to sign with Carolina. Maybe he was just chasing the biggest paycheck. Maybe he thinks the Panthers give him the best chance to win a Super Bowl as he enters the twilight of his career. Or maybe, just maybe, he wants to get some revenge on the team who drafted him, paid him millions of dollars to chase opposing quarterbacks and then cut him loose when it was convenient for them to do so. Revenge is one hell of a motivational tool, so let’s hope that McCoy uses that to have one of his best seasons yet. The Panthers could certainly benefit from it.
